About Us

Leesburg Humane Society is a private, no-kill, non-profit animal shelter, serving our local community since 1960. We are not affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States.

We are solely run on private donations and do not receive any government funding. Being a smaller shelter, we can utilize our donations to give the best possible care to the animals in the shelter. We also accept donations of food and supplies. Items we need can be found on our Donate page.

We also operate a bargain store on County Road 473 in Leesburg. We cannot accept donations of large items such as large appliances, bedding, and furniture, but gladly accept clothing, collectibles, dishes, kitchen items, tools, etc. The bargain store is staffed entirely by volunteers and all money from sales support the shelter.

Our staff is supplemented with a wonderful group of volunteers that help with caring for the dogs and cats. Volunteers are an important part of our mission and are a great help in assisting staff with tasks and helping socialize the pets in our care.

Our Adoptable Pets

Every pet that is adopted from us is spayed, neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. Dogs are also tested for heartworm and cats are tested for feline leukemia and FIV. Our adoption fee covers these costs. Prospective adopters are carefully screened, and home visits may take place as often as possible prior to or after an adoption. Please click here for more information about our adoption policies and requirements.

Services to the Community

While we do not offer spay/neuter or veterinary services to the public, we do work with local veterinarians to offer reduced rates for spay/neuter to those who need financial assistance. We offer these services to help prevent adding to the overpopulation of unwanted pets in the community. We also operate a dog and cat food pantry for those in need of food for their pets.

We are always available to speak to local service agencies, organizations, and schools to provide educational programs. We welcome school groups to visit the shelter to learn more about caring for animals and humane education.

We cooperate with Lake County Animal Control in assisting with abuse and neglect investigations. We are part of the local and state Disaster Animal Relief Teams operated in conjunction with the Humane Society of the United States

The Leesburg Humane Society Animal Bill of Rights

Right to feel safe:  many animals that enter our organization come from a past of neglect or abuse or both. Every animal that resides at our shelter deserves to feel safe and secure in their environment. All members of our organization should always give their best efforts to help all animals feel safe at the shelter.

Right to a clean and sanitary living area:  all animals have the right to reside in an area that is clean and free of debris, disease, and waste.

Right to a comfortable living area:  all animals have the right to a comfortable living space and deserve to have a bed available to them or something soft that they may relax or sleep on if they choose to do so. No animal will ever be forced to lay on a concrete floor.

Right to high quality veterinary care: all animals have the right to receive the highest quality veterinary care possible. This includes both routine care and unforeseen care that may be needed. It is the responsibility of the Board of Directors and Executive Director to ensure a high standard of care is afforded to each animal.

Right to quality food and water: all animals have the right to quality, nourishing food. All animals have the right to fresh and clean water at all times.

Right to not die alone: all animals, due to health reasons and when no other alternative is humanly possible, have the right to be accompanied by a member of the organization during their final moments. No animal at the shelter will pass away alone and afraid.

Right to physical and mental stimulation: all animals have the right to play, exercise, explore their environment, and receive loving and positive attention/affection.

Right to a loving home: all animals have the right to a loving forever home. It is important that all members of the organization try very hard to find the best candidate(s) for organization animals. If we do not feel like the animal and potential adopter(s) are a good fit, we have the right to refuse the adoption. We strive to get it right.
